Facade and roof: inscription by decree of 16 May 1927
Origin and history
The house located in 21 Place du Palais in Avignon is a monument listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments. This building, whose location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), is distinguished by its facade and roof, protected by ministerial decree since 16 May 1927. These architectural elements, typical of the Avignon heritage, reflect a time when the preservation of civilian buildings became a cultural priority in France.
In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and especially in Avignon, ancient houses like this one testify to the urban and social evolution of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, the period of its protection, Avignon was already recognized for its rich heritage, marked by centuries of pontifical and commercial history. Civilian buildings, often seemingly modest, played a central role in everyday life, sheltering local artisans, merchants or notables.
Their conservation makes it possible today to understand the lifestyles and spatial organization of Provençal cities throughout the ages.
