Origin and history
The Maison Verges Pierre, located on Rue Saint-Jean in Villefranche-de-Conflent, dates from the 13th century. This historic monument is distinguished by its large arches on the ground floor, probably redesigned after the initial construction. Two arches in the middle, separated by a pillar, have a chamfered interior frame, while crows and door posts keep traces of the same decor. These elements suggest architectural transformations after the original construction.
On the first floor, a marble framed window takes on the style of crows and lintels observed on the ground floor, with a similar chamfered decor. The light of this window, however, was shot down, partially altering its original appearance. The street façade and its corresponding roof were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 3 November 1965, highlighting their heritage value.
The architectural features of the Verges Pierre house, such as arches and marble frames, reflect medieval construction techniques adapted to civilian needs. Although later changes have altered some elements, the structure retains significant remains of its time, notably through chamfers and decorative crows. These details offer a material testimony to the urban evolution of Villefranche-de-Conflent, a fortified town of the Eastern Pyrenees marked by its medieval history.
