Covered gallery (Case D 593): inscription by order of 25 June 1929
Origin and history
The Vergnes House is part of a remarkable architectural ensemble of Mirepoix, known as the Cutlery. These houses, characterized by their covered galleries, form an urban heritage typical of the region, testifying to the medieval and post-medieval organization of commercial and residential spaces. Their wooden and stone structure reflects local construction techniques, adapted to the needs of the inhabitants and the materials available in Ariège.
The inscription of the covered gallery of the house Vergnes in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 25 June 1929 underlines its heritage importance. This type of construction, often associated with the central squares of the cities, served both as a shelter for merchants and as a place of sociability for the inhabitants. In Mirepoix, as in other medieval cities of Occitanie, these galleries played a key role in economic and social life, protecting commercial activities from the weather while structuring public space.
