Origin and history
The house at 5 rue du 1er-Bataillon in Senones is a remarkable example of Art Nouveau architecture in the Vosges department. Built in 1910, it is distinguished by its facade and roof, typical of this artistic movement that marked the beginning of the twentieth century. The building also includes a commercial space on the ground floor, reflecting the common mixed use (habitation and commerce) in the city centres of the time.
The building was designed by local architect Louis-Paul Bauer, assisted by the Guggiari entrepreneur, both based in Senones. Their collaboration gave rise to a monument that combines innovative aesthetics and functionality, characteristic of Art Nouveau achievements in the province. The architectural quality of the building led to its partial inscription (facade and roof) as historical monuments by order of 15 January 1975.
The Art Nouveau style, although rarer in small communes like Senones, reflects a desire for modernity and urban beautification at the beginning of the 20th century. This house thus illustrates the influence of national artistic currents in rural or semi-urban territories, where local artisans adapted these trends to suit the needs of the inhabitants.
The protection of the monument in 1975 underlines its heritage importance, particularly for the preservation of the commercial facades of this period. Today, it is a visual and historical landmark in the Senones landscape, recalling the architectural and economic dynamism of the city at the beginning of the last century.
