façades and roofs (Case D 384): inscription by decree of 18 September 1937

Origin and history

The house in Vézelay, in the department of Yonne, is a 15th century monument. It is distinguished by its medieval civil architecture, typical of this period in Burgundy. Its facades and roofs, inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 18 September 1937, testify to its heritage importance.

The building is located on Rue de l'Hôpital, although GPS coordinates also suggest a nearby address at 3 rue du Couvent. Vézelay, the emblematic city of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, was in the 15th century a dynamic religious and economic center, marked by the presence of the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. The houses of that time often served as houses for pilgrims, artisans or local notables.

Their preservation, like that of this house, allows to understand the urban and social organization of the city at the end of the Middle Ages. These buildings also reflect the construction techniques and materials used in the region during this period.
