Origin and history

The houses located at 25 rue Blotterie and 3 rue Saint-Sauveur in La Rochelle are 15th-century architecture buildings, although their origins may date back to the 16th or early 17th century. Their structure combines facades partly made of stone (ground floor and intersoil) and wood, typical of the urban dwellings of this period. Although the interior has been modernized and the staircase is recent, these houses retain notable historical elements, such as their corner layout without inner courtyard.

These houses survived the siege of La Rochelle in 1628, suggesting a construction prior to this landmark event in local history. Their protection as a Historic Monument, with an inscription of the facades and roofs by decree of 12 January 1931, bears witness to their heritage value. Their location in the city centre, near emblematic streets, reinforces their historical and architectural interest.

The accuracy of their location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), and their exact address is documented in the Merimée database. These houses, although remodeled inside, offer an overview of the urban habitat of the 16th and 17th centuries, during which the city played a major commercial and strategic role on the Atlantic facade.
