Origin and history
The houses located in Beaumontois in Périgord constitute a medieval complex, part of which rests directly on the city rampart. Their construction seems to be linked to the foundation of the bastide at the end of the 13th century, a period marked by the rise of new towns in Périgord. These houses, although transformed in the 19th century into a facade, retain architectural elements characteristic of their original era, such as roofs and walls integrated with fortifications.
Classified as a Historical Monument since 1952, these houses illustrate the urban evolution of Beaumont-du-Périgord, where the bastide played a central role in the medieval social and economic organization. Their protection specifically concerns the facades overlooking the rampart and the corresponding roofs, highlighting their heritage value. The approximate location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), is located around Ratier Street, in the historic heart of the town.
The whole is part of a broader context of bastide development in New Aquitaine, where these planned cities served as trade and administrative hubs. Subsequent transformations, such as those of the 19th century, reflect the adaptations of buildings to the changing needs of the inhabitants, while partially preserving their medieval structure. No information is available on any owners or artisans who have contributed to their construction.
