Origin and history
The Houses of the Guet of La Martyre are two buildings located on both sides of the entrance to the parish enclosures of this village of Finistère. Built in the 14th century, they bear witness to the defensive and symbolic architecture of the medieval period in Brittany. The oriental house, listed in 1925 on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments, is distinguished by its protected facade, while the western house, registered in 1987, presents a rectangular plan with a wing in return communicating with the round path of the enclosures.
The house at the east has an entrance door adorned with the shield of the lords of Leon, highlighting its link with this powerful noble Breton family. These houses, integrated into the classified parish enclosures, probably illustrated a surveillance or access control role, typical of medieval watchpieces. Their preservation reflects their heritage importance, both for their architecture and for their anchoring in local history.
The parish enclosure of La Martyre, of which these houses are part, is a characteristic example of the fortified religious ensembles of Brittany, combining spiritual and defensive functions. The location of the Guet Houses, framing the entrance to the cemetery, suggests a desire to mark symbolically and physically access to this sacred place, while ensuring protection against possible intrusions. Their gradual registration as Historic Monuments (1925 and 1987) attests to their late but lasting heritage recognition.
