Origin and history
La Maison de Malicorne is an ancient house located in the alley of the same name, in Crosmières, in the department of Sarthe. Built mainly in the second half of the 15th century, it retains architectural elements from the 14th and 15th centuries. The building was partially renovated in the 19th century, including its elevations, staircase and interior layout, where traces of an old courière remain.
The house houses a monumental wall painting dating back to the late 15th century, depicting Saint Christophe bearing the child Jesus. This work, classified as historical monuments, adorns a room on the first floor, which also includes a remarkable fireplace. The facades, the roofs and this decorative ensemble were inscribed in historical monuments by order of 4 August 1978.
According to sources, the current stairway may have replaced a primitive exterior staircase, giving access to a passageway fixed on the front façade of the house. The consoles of this structure are still visible today. The house thus illustrates the architectural evolution of medieval houses in Sarthe, between tradition and subsequent adaptations.
