16th century gate: inscription by decree of 15 June 1927
Origin and history
The Manor House of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer is a historic building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Calvados, Normandy. Built in the 16th century, it is now mainly known for its entrance gate, the only remaining vestige of the era. This portal, typical of Renaissance architecture, was inscribed as the Historic Monuments on June 15, 1927, reflecting its heritage importance.
The portal is located south of the St. Lawrence Church, on the road to Port-en-Bessin. Although the rest of the mansion has disappeared, this vestige offers an overview of the civil architecture of the region during the Renaissance. The classification of the portal highlights its historical and artistic interest, while recalling the local history of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, a commune marked by its medieval heritage and its role in Lower Normandy.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm that the portal is the only protected element of the mansion. No additional information is provided on the original owners, past uses of the mansion or the reasons for its partial disappearance. The approximate address, 8 Route de Port-en-Bessin, allows to situate the monument in a precise geographical setting, strengthening its anchor in the Norman territory.
