Origin and history

The Chapuis mansion is a private hotel built in Douvaine, Haute-Savoie, between courtyard and garden. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 18th century, it was built in the 1780s as an old notarial house of the commune. This building illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by a spatial organization typical of bourgeois or professional residences of the period.

The manor house was listed as historic monuments by order of 29 June 1995. This protection specifically concerns its facades and roofs, its entrance gate, as well as interior elements such as the dining room with its curved closet and first floor vestibule. These architectural details reflect the care given to both aesthetics and the functionality of spaces.

Located in the centre of the village of Douvaine, the Chapuis mansion is part of the local heritage of Haute-Savoie, a region then marked by a rural and artisanal society. Notarial houses, like this one, played a central role in the administrative and legal life of the communities, serving as a place of conservation of acts and meeting for legal affairs. Their presence attests to the social and economic organization of Savoy at the end of the Ancien Régime.
