Origin and history

Bosdel Manor is a building built mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries on the town of Saint-Lô, on the edge of the Vire River. The adjoining, older farm dates back to the end of the 16th century. This manor house is part of a group of small local castles, including those of the Vaucelle, the Palière (today the town hall of Agneaux) and Sainte-Marie, located downstream of the Vire. Its location facing the cliff of Agneaux makes it a remarkable site of Norman heritage.

During the Second World War, the mansion was occupied by the Germans and suffered major damage during the 1944 bombings. A bomb fell into the water of the estate, destroying the roof and chapel, of which no vestige remains. The departmental archives, which could have shed light on its history, were largely lost during the bombings of Saint-Lô that same year. Despite these destructions, the manor house was listed in the inventory of historic monuments on 1 April 1946, recognizing its heritage value.

Today, Bosdel's mansion bears witness to both the seigneurial architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries and the scars left by the war. Its designation as historic monuments in 1946 underlines its importance in the cultural landscape of Normandy, despite the documentary gaps caused by conflicts. The site remains an example of the noble homes of the region, linked to local history and the transformation of the territory over the centuries.
