Origin and history
The manor house of the Chevalinière, located in Saint-Martin-des-Bois in the Loir-et-Cher (Centre-Val de Loire region), is a historical monument dating from the 15th century. Former fief under the seigneury of the Tertre de Montoire, it illustrates the seigneurial architecture of the late Middle Ages by its defensive and residential elements, such as its polygonal tower of stairs and its facade on courtyard.
The front door of the house is decorated with a chimera carved in the left base, a remarkable artistic detail for the era. Inside, the screw staircase combines stone in lower part and wood in upper part, common mixed technique in medieval buildings. A servitude building, partly with wooden panels, completes the whole east and south-east of the house, testifying to the domestic organisation of the rural seigneuries.
The manor house was partially protected by an order of 27 June 1984 covering its facades, roofs, screw staircases and three chimneys on the first floor. These elements, still visible today, offer an overview of the nobiliary life and constructive techniques of the 15th century in the Loire Valley.
