Origin and history

The Manor House of the Fosse, located in Avrilly in the department of Orne, is a building built in the late seventeenth century. It replaces an older home built at the same location. This monument illustrates the architectural evolution of Norman manors, with major modifications made over the following centuries.

In 1817, significant works transformed the site, notably by filling the moat and reshaping the pavilions. Around 1870, two wings were added to the north and south ends of the main house body, giving it its present appearance. The central forebody, surmounted by a triangular pediment pierced by an oculus, is characteristic of this period.

Inside, the mansion retains remarkable elements such as a living room decorated with 18th century woodwork and a staircase with a wooden ramp carved from the late 17th century, typical of the region. Two rooms on the first floor also feature 18th-century woodwork and haze. These interior decorations, as well as the facades and roofs, have been protected since the partial inscription of the monument under the title of the Historic Monuments on November 7, 1975.

The Mansion of the Fosse thus reflects the successive adaptations of a seigneurial residence, from a defensive function (with its initial moats) to a more residential and aesthetic vocation in the 19th century. Its architecture and interior decorations make it a valuable testimony to local history and the art of living in Normandy throughout the eras.
