Origin and history

The Manor of La Fromentière, located in the commune of Saint-Mards-de-Fresne (Eure, Normandy), dates from the second half of the 18th century. This building, representative of the Norman rural architecture of this time, is distinguished by its facades and roofs, which were listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 12 May 1976. Its location, at 28 Franval, is documented in the Merimée base, although the accuracy of its location is considered to be satisfactory a priori (note 6/10).

The protection of the manor is specifically concerned with its exterior elements (cadastre ZA 69), highlighting its heritage interest without providing details of its history or occupants. Available sources, such as Monumentum, do not mention any specific sponsorship or use of the building beyond its status as a listed monument. The absence of information about an opening to the public or services (visits, guest rooms) suggests private use or preservation with a strictly heritage vocation.

At the time of its construction, Normandy was marked by a rural economy dominated by agriculture and livestock, with manor houses such as this often serving as residences for landowners or wealthy families. These buildings represented both a social status and a role in the local organisation, without precise archives allowing a specific function to be assigned to the Manor House of the Fromentière. Its late inscription (1976) reflects a wider heritage awareness in France during the 20th century.
