Origin and history

The Grand'Isle Manor House, located in Saint-Bihy in the Côtes-d'Armor (Bretagne), has its origins in the 16th century, with a construction dating from 1567. It was erected by the king's treasurer and then depended on the estate of Crenan. Originally, the building was protected by a fortified enclosure, punctuated by five square towers and surrounded by moat, whose remains still remain today. These defensive elements underline its strategic or symbolic importance in modern times.

The current mansion is mainly a 17th century reconstruction, marked by an architectural style dominated by ionic order, reflecting the aesthetic evolutions of the period. Part of the east wing was restored again in 1900, reusing the original stones to preserve its historic character. These successive transformations illustrate the adaptation of the building to the needs and tastes of its occupants throughout the centuries.

Ranked a historic monument since 15 March 1967, the Grand'Isle Manor House bears witness to both Breton seigneurial architecture and social changes between Renaissance and contemporary times. Its official inscription enshrines its heritage value, while protecting the physical traces of its past, such as moats or foundations of ancient towers.

The sources available (Wikipedia, Monumentum) also mention its precise address: 1 La Grande Isle, 22800 Saint-Bihy, in the department of Côtes-d-Armor. The site, although partially modified, remains a representative example of Breton manors, mixing residential, defensive and symbolic functions since the 16th century.
