Origin and history

The manor house of Loraille, located in the commune of Saint-Roch-sur-Égrenne (Orne, Normandy), is a building dating back to the 4th quarter of the 16th century. It initially consists of a large pavilion, a left wing and a tower with murderers, reflecting a defensive vocation. The tower houses a spiral staircase serving the rooms of the left wing and the pavilion, characteristic of the fortified Renaissance residential architecture.

In the 18th century, the mansion was enlarged by the addition of a right wing, built in 1783. This extension, in classic style, contrasts with the older parts and preserves interiors decorated with Louis XV woodwork, reflecting the evolution of aristocratic tastes. The whole, partially protected, has been listed in the Historical Monuments since July 11, 1975, covering facades, roofs, screw staircases and all the interior chimneys.

The site thus illustrates the transition between a late medieval architecture, marked by defensive elements, and a pleasant residence of the Enlightenment century. Its state of conservation and its protections make it a notable example of Normandy's rural heritage, mixing old military utility and subsequent residential comfort.
