Origin and history

The manor house of Malaise is a 15th and 16th century residence in the commune of Saint-Hilaire-sur-Erre, in the department of Orne in Normandy. This monument illustrates the defensive and rural architecture of the Perche region, with a main house body flanked by a circular tower and a square pavilion housing a spiral staircase and an old chapel. The facades, roofs and the supply house were listed as historic monuments in 1990, highlighting their heritage value.

The main building, rectangular, dates from the 16th century and retains defensive elements such as the southwest corner tower. A contemporary square pavilion contains remarkable architectural details, such as towel folded doors and a spiral staircase. To the north, a more recent extension extends the whole, while five 19th century common buildings, typical of the Perche, complete the estate.

The set reflects the evolution of lifestyles between the Middle Ages and the modern era, combining residential, religious (private) and agricultural (common) functions. The 1990 partial protection aims to preserve these testimonies of local history, where the mansion played a central role in the social and economic organization of the territory.

The precise location of the mansion, at the place called La Malaise, is attested by the bases Mérimée and Monumentum, which place it at 145 road of Malaise, in a rural setting characteristic of Lower Normandy. The commons, built in the 19th century, illustrate the adaptation of the estate to the agricultural needs of the time, while maintaining stylistic consistency with the old home.
