Origin and history
The manor house of the Bas-Cousse, located in Vernou-sur-Brenne (Indre-et-Loire), is a 16th-century seigneurial house, listed as a historical monument on April 14, 1947. He was a fief dependent on the Barony of Ile-Bouchard, illustrating the local feudal organization. The main building, with a rectangular plan, is completed by a square pavilion reinforced with foothills, one of the corners of which houses a chapel vaulted with warheads and prismatic mouldings.
The chapel, which has been protected since 1947, is distinguished by its concentric veins and its cloves carved of angelots or fantastic animals, typical of late Gothic art. To the west of the court, a ruined cylindrical runaway (pigeon) testifies to the agricultural and seigneurial activities of the estate. The ensemble reflects the aristocratic residential architecture of the Renaissance in Touraine, mixing defensive, religious and symbolic functions.
The site, located at C 48 on D 641 (approximate coordinates: 5 Rue du Bas Cousse), retains traces of its medieval past despite the partial erosion of some elements, such as the missing pendants of the vault. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underscores its heritage value, linked to the feudal and architectural history of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
