Facades and roofs (Case E 293): inscription by decree of 11 June 1964
Origin and history
The manor house of Guermain, located in Le Foeil in the Côtes-d'Armor department, is an emblematic 16th century building. It preserves architectural elements characteristic of the ogival period, such as acute and hooked stacks. The main façade, adorned with a columned door, capitals carved of busts and volutes, as well as a triangular pediment, reflects the stylistic influences of the late Renaissance in Brittany. A staircase tower, next to the posterior façade, completes this remarkable architectural ensemble.
The manor house was partially listed as historical monuments by order of 11 June 1964, specifically protecting its facades and roofs. This official recognition underscores its heritage importance and the quality of its decorative details, such as pots and decorated capitals. These elements, which appeared in the region at the end of the 16th century, testify to the evolution of artistic tastes and the influence of the architectural currents of the time.
Located in a region with a high density of manor houses and castles, Guermain is part of a historical landscape where these buildings played a central role in social and economic organization. At that time, Brittany, then integrated into the Kingdom of France, saw its local elites build or modernize their homes, combining local traditions and innovations from elsewhere. The manor house, by its style and preservation, thus offers a valuable testimony of this pivotal era.
