Origin and history
Hotel Marbotin is an 18th-century mansion located in Bordeaux, in the Saint-Bruno district, at 28-30 rue Blanchard-Latour. Built in 1770 for the Feger family, a rich line of parliamentarians and shipowners involved in the slave trade, it is the last vestige of the Vincennes estate, a popular pleasure place of the Bordelais under the Restoration, where were held balls and concerts. Its architecture reflects the style of Bordeaux Chartreuses, with a rectangular plan, a double facade, and a double-revolution staircase.
In 1825, part of the estate was sold to install the first gas plant in Bordeaux, intended to illuminate the city. The rest of the land is loti from the 1850s onwards, giving birth to a popular neighborhood. The hotel, now surrounded by a small garden, has preserved facades and roofs listed as historical monuments since July 21, 1967. The decorative elements, such as the window keys decorated with shells and female figures, bear witness to its past prestige.
The building is distinguished by its raised ground floor, accessible by a monumental staircase, and a half-round cornice girding the whole. Originally integrated into a vast park, the domain of Vincennes, it illustrates the urban evolution of Bordeaux, between 18th century aristocratic heritage and 19th century industrial transformations. The facades and roofs, protected since 1967, recall its heritage importance in a city marked by maritime commerce and classical architecture.
