Origin and history

The covered market of Belfort, built in 1905, is part of the first quarter of the 20th century. It is located on former fortifications of the city, marking a transition between military and civilian urban planning. This building uses innovative metal construction techniques for the time, reflecting the industrial advances of the period. Its functional architecture met the growing needs of an expanding urban population, while symbolizing modernity.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 30 December 1983, the covered market is a representative example of the utilitarian architectural heritage of the early twentieth century. Its protection highlights its historical and technical importance. The actors involved in its construction, such as architect Eugène Lux and entrepreneurs Schwartz and Meurer, helped shape an iconic building in Belfort. Today, it remains a central place for local life, perpetuating its initial commercial vocation.

The location of the market, at 12 Rue de la Cavalerie or Rue du Docteur-Fréry, testifies to its integration into the urban fabric of Belfort. Although the available geographical data are considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10), its anchoring in the commune is undeniable. A municipal property, it continues to play a social and economic role for the inhabitants, while embodying a unique industrial and architectural heritage.
