Origin and history

Lamentin Market is a public building built in 1931 by architect Ali Tur as part of the reconstruction of the city after the damage caused by Hurricane Okeechobee in September 1928. This project, entrusted by the Ministry of Colonies, was designed to restore the main civil and religious buildings of Lamentin, ensuring urban and architectural homogeneity in the city centre. This market is part of a coherent whole including justice of peace, city hall, school group, monument to the dead, and church of the Holy Trinity.

Designed in reinforced concrete, the market is distinguished by its open structure, composed of cylindrical posts supporting a slab, surrounded by a protruding awning. Inside, concrete displays welcome fruit and vegetable vendors, while closed counters, located at the bottom, are reserved for meat products and fish. This building, still in operation, illustrates the adaptation of modern techniques to local needs.

The Lamentin Market was listed as a historic monument on August 28, 2009, recognizing its heritage and architectural value. It symbolizes both the resilience of the community after a natural disaster and the legacy of architect Ali Tur, whose works are a lasting mark of the urban landscape of Guadeloupe. The concentration of his achievements in Lamentin makes him a unique place to study his style and his urban approach.
