Origin and history

The covered market of Lamentin, located on the island of Martinique, was completed in 1847, making it the oldest covered market still existing on the island. Its metallic architecture, inspired by the Baltard halls, is distinguished by a central nave flanked by two side-slopes, each with its own roof. The gable façade, decorated with a clock and stained glass windows, as well as the upper ventels, reflect the industrial style of the late 19th century. Originally, the market was divided into three areas: fruit and vegetables in the centre, meat on the left (with a cold room), and fish on the right, equipped with granite tables.

The reception of the works took place in 1847, followed in 1849 by the auction of the stalls to Mr. Louis Sully's company. In 1881, a Governor's Order allowed the market to expand by acquiring an adjacent building. Over time, changes have altered some of the original elements: the sheet roof replaced the initial cover, the metal poles were changed, and lateral extensions were added. Despite these changes, the market has maintained its overall structure and its central role in supplying the surrounding municipalities, especially on Sundays.

Ranked as a historical monument on August 3, 2023 (after registration in 2019), the market illustrates both a rare architectural heritage in Martinique and a continuity of use for almost 180 years. The modernization work, such as that of 1996 (upgrading to the sanitary standards of the butcher shop) or of 2006 (complete restructuring and accessibility PMR), has preserved its functioning while adapting its infrastructures. Its rectangular plan, its base and its wrought iron fences recall the Parisian halls, while integrating local specificities such as the public latrines paid in the basement.

The Lamentin covered market is also distinguished by its decorative details, now partially modified: the stained glass windows on the eastern facade replaced old Persians, and sheet metal panels were added to close some spaces. Despite these developments, there remains a major testimony of Martinique's economic and social history, linking industrial heritage and daily life. Its official address, 7 Rue Ernest André, and its Insee code (97213) confirm its anchoring in the municipality of Lamentin, municipal property.
