Origin and history

The covered market of Saint-Pierre, located in the city centre of Réunion Island, is a metal hall built in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Installed in 1874 or 1876 (the sources diverge), it was designed by the Cail & Compagnie workshops, specialized in metal structures. Its dodecagonal plan (12 sides), its 13-metre-high structure and its 12 arches connected to a central pole make it a remarkable example of colonial utility architecture. Four cast iron fountains from the Ducel foundries adorn space, adding an aesthetic dimension to its commercial function.

Ranked a historic monument since October 22, 1998, the market covers not only the hall, but also its grounds, fountains, fence wall and entrance gate. Its structure recalls that of the market of Lerme in Bordeaux (Charles Burguet), highlighting the architectural exchanges between metropolis and overseas. Owned by the commune of Saint-Pierre, it remains a central place for local commerce, testifying to the economic and urban history of La Réunion.

The location of the market, in the lower part of Saint-Pierre, reflects its historical role as a bazaar (term used in colonial times to designate a covered market). The official coordinates place him at the intersection of Victor-le-Vigoureux Street and the alley of the Old Government, although sources also mention an approximate address at 7 Rue du Marché. Its state of conservation and heritage value make it a must-see site for the heritage of Réunion.
