Origin and history
The Mataguerre Tower is a 13th-century fortification tower located in Périgueux, Dordogne. It is one of the last vestiges of the medieval rampart that protected the "Puy Saint-Front", the historic core of the city. Completely rebuilt in the 15th century, it illustrates the evolution of urban fortifications in the Middle Ages.
In the 17th century, the tower changed its function and served as a powder warehouse from 1622 to 1831. Its condition gradually deteriorated: its conical roof was abolished in 1807. Despite these alterations, it was classified as historic monuments in 1840, recognizing its heritage value.
Architecturally, the tower is distinguished by its circular shape, with a flared base and a coronation of mâchicoulis. It houses archeries and offers, from its round path, a panoramic view of Périgueux. Today, open to the public, it exhibits medieval weapons and an orientation table to identify the surrounding monuments.
Located in the centre of the city, rue de la Bride, the Mataguerre tower is part of the Périgueux protected area. It bears witness to the military and urban history of the city, while being a major tourist point of interest to discover the perigord heritage.
