Origin and history

The mausoleum of General Charpentier is a funeral monument located in the cemetery of Oigny-en-Valois, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, it pays tribute to General Henri-François-Marie Charpentier (1769-1831), a military figure of the Empire who participated in the campaigns of Russia, Germany and France. This mausoleum, typical of the funeral architecture of the Restoration, is distinguished by its sarcophagus in white marble and a bas-relief bust, as well as by inscriptions evoking the general's main weaponry.

General Charpentier, born in Soissons, retired in 1824 to his castle in Oigny-en-Valois, where he died in 1831. The monument, erected in his memory, was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 9 April 1990. Today it belongs to the commune and illustrates the importance attached to the commemoration of military heroes in post-revolutionary France, combining personal tribute and glorification of Napoleonic campaigns.

The mausoleum is located at the following address: 1 Rue de la Ferme, 02600 Oigny-en-Valois. Its location, noted as "passable" in the databases, makes it a local historical point of interest, although little known outside the region. The site is not explicitly mentioned as open to visit, but its status as a historic monument guarantees its preservation and heritage enhancement.
