Origin and history

Beaumont-Hamel's Newfoundland Memorial is a memorial site dedicated to the Dominion of Newfoundland soldiers who fell during the First World War, including the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. On that day, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was almost wiped out in thirty minutes, with 801 men out of 865. The park, stretching over thirty hectares, preserves the traces of the battlefield, including trenches and craters, offering a poignant testimony of fighting.

In 1921, the Newfoundland government and the families of the soldiers acquired 16 hectares of land to erect a memorial, inaugurated on June 7, 1925 by Marshal Douglas Haig. The park, designed by landscape architect Rudolph Cochius, incorporates trees and rocks imported from Newfoundland, as well as a bronze caribou, the regiment's emblem, carved by Basil Gotto. This memorial is one of only two National Historic Sites of Canada located outside the country, alongside Vimy.

The park is home to several monuments, including one dedicated to the 29th British Division, to which the Newfoundland Regiment belonged, and another to the 51st Scottish Highlands Division, marked by a kilt soldier statue. Three military cemeteries (Y Ravine Cemetery, Hunters Cemetery, Hawthorn Ridge Cemetery No. 2) are also present, sheltering the remains of British, Scottish and Newfoundland soldiers. The site, protected as historical monuments since 2017, includes a interpretive centre tracing the history of the regiment and the context of the Great War.

The remnants of the battlefield, such as the German and British trenches only 275 metres away, or the Tree of Danger, a tree ravaged by fighting, recall the intensity of the clashes. The memorial, located at the foot of the Caribou hill, bears the names of 820 missing from the Newfoundland regiment and merchant navy. An orientation table at the top offers a panoramic view of the site, reinforcing its sacred and educational character.

Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Park, a 1996 national historic site of Canada, is an integral part of the Remembrance Circuit. It symbolizes the sacrifice of Newfoundland and Scottish soldiers, while preserving the memory of the battles that marked the region. Its landscaping and monuments make it a place of recollection and transmission of the history of the First World War.
