Origin and history
The Menhir de Coat-Couraval is a megalithic monument located in Glomel, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. Elongated in Neolithic, it is distinguished by its tapered and irregular shape, measuring 3.50 meters high for 1.15 meters wide and 0.60 meters thick. Its appearance could be the result of post-erect flow attempts. Composed of granite from the Massif de Rostrenen, it was implanted mid-coteau, in a typical landscape of the region.
The menhir was registered as historic monuments by order of 10 August 1970, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Its precise location is indicated as 5782 Le Moulin de Coat Couraval, in the municipality of Glomel, referenced under the code Insee 22061. This monument illustrates the importance of megalithic sites in the Armor Coasts, an area rich in prehistoric remains.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its membership of the Breton megalithic heritage. A study by Loïc Langouët, The Megaliths of Guingamp District (2006), briefly mentions this menhir, confirming its integration into a wider set of similar sites. However, no additional information on its ritual or symbolic use is provided in the source texts.
