Origin and history

The Menhir de Bodquelen is a megalithic vestige located in Canihuel, in the department of Côtes-d-Armor, Brittany. Dated from Neolithic, this large grain granite block is 3.80 m high with a width of 2.38 m and a thickness of 2.20 m. Its inclusion in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments in 1969 underlines its heritage importance.

The monument is located precisely at address 1 Bodquelen, 22480 Canihuel, and its location is referenced in the Merimée base under INSEE code 22029. Although its geographical accuracy is considered passable (note 5/10), it remains a point of interest for the study of Breton megaliths, as Loïc Langouët mentions in his book Les megalithes de l'arrondissement de Guingamp (2006).

The protection of the menhir by decree of 22 July 1969 guarantees its preservation, while integrating with the lists of megalithic sites and historical monuments of the Côtes-d'Armor. No information is available on its current accessibility or tourist use, but its status as a historical monument makes it a key element of local heritage.

In Neolithic, menhirs like Bodquelen were often associated with ritual or funeral practices, reflecting the social and spiritual organization of the communities of the time. Their erection required collective mobilization, demonstrating technical know-how and advanced social structuring. In Brittany, these monuments still mark the landscape, recalling the deep anchoring of this region in European prehistory.
