Menhir de Champ l'Ecuyer (Case C 2316): by order of 8 July 1924
Origin and history
The Menhir de Champ l'Ecuyer is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Nant-le-Grand, in the department of Meuse (55). Dating from Neolithic, it is part of a period marked by the emergence of agriculture and the sedentarization of populations. This type of monument, often associated with ritual or funeral functions, illustrates the cultural and religious practices of local prehistoric societies.
The menhir was classified as a Historic Monument by order of 8 July 1924, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune of Nant-le-Grand, it is today a rare vestige of megalithic constructions of the Lorraine (Great East) region. Although its exact location is approximate (precision noted 5/10), it remains a point of interest for the study of prehistory in France.
Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives indicate that the menhir is referenced under cadastre C 2316. No additional information is provided on its current state, its accessibility to the public or any associated archaeological excavations. Its ranking in 1924 nevertheless underlines its importance in the national heritage, thus protecting this material testimony of the first Neolithic communities of the Meuse.
