Origin and history
The Menhir de Coporh, located in the municipality of Sarzeau (Morbihan, Brittany), is an emblematic vestige of the Neolithic period. This megalithic monument, typical of Breton prehistoric architecture, was erected several millennia ago, although its exact function (territorial marker, place of worship or burial) remains subject to interpretation by archaeologists. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 2023 underscores its heritage importance, with protection extended to a radius of 10 meters around its base.
The location of the menhir, at approximately 7 Coporh 56370 Sarzeau, is documented in the Mérimée database under Insee 56240 (Morbihan). The site, owned by the commune, is referenced in the cadastre under section ZW parcel n°155. Although available sources (Monumentum) do not specify its current accessibility, its conservation status and visibility on Street View suggest relative accessibility. The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair (note 5/10), perhaps reflecting minor geographical uncertainties.
In Neolithic, menhirs like Coporh were often associated with collective practices, whether religious, funeral or social. In Brittany, this period saw the emergence of sedentary societies organized around agriculture and livestock, with a strong symbolic link to the erected stones. These monuments, scattered in the landscape, probably marked territories or places of assembly, although their exact meaning remains partially enigmatic in the absence of contemporary written sources.
