Menhir de Courtevrais (Case E 200): Order of 20 October 1983

Origin and history

The Menhir de Courtevrais is a 4 metre high stoneware block in the municipality of Nogent-le-Bernard, Sarthe. This megalithic monument, typical of Neolithic, bears witness to the cultural and religious practices of local prehistoric societies. Its location in the landscape probably reflects a symbolic or functional choice related to the agricultural or ritual activities of the time.

Ranked as historical monuments on 20 October 1983, the Menhir de Courtevrais illustrates the heritage interest accorded to megalithic remains in France. These erect stones, often associated with burials or territorial markers, play a key role in understanding the social and spiritual organizations of neolithic communities. Their preservation allows us to study the techniques of size, transport and erection used several millennia ago.
