Origin and history
The menhir of Glomel is a block of grey granite, probably extracted from a local quarry, located in the village of Glomel, in the Côtes-d'Armor. Weighing between 80 and 160 tons, it measures 8.50 meters in height with an average width of 4 meters and a thickness of 1.50 meters. Its shape evokes a truncated pyramid, with an almost perfect face. Built at 237 meters above sea level, it rests on a granite platform, making it one of the most massive menhirs in Brittany, even the heaviest.
Menhir was classified as historic monuments by decree on November 4, 1975, thereby recognizing its exceptional heritage value. Its quadrangular base and its remarkable state of preservation, without apparent cracks, testify to advanced techniques of size and transport for the Neolithic era. Its location in the landscape, in the heart of the village, suggests a symbolic or ritual significance for the local communities of the time.
The sources available, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, underline its membership in the rich megalithic heritage of the Côtes-d的Armor. A study published in 2006 by Loïc Langouët in Les megalithes de l'arrondissement de Guingamp mentions this as one of the emblematic sites of the region. Its exact address, 4 Chemin du Menhir, and its Insee code (22061) confirm its territorial anchoring in the municipality of Glomel, attached to the borough of Saint-Brieuc.
