Origin and history

The Menhir de Haute-Crane, also known as Menhir de la Serpinerie, is a megalithic vestige located in the municipality of Dissay-sous-Courcillon, Sarthe. This monument, erected during the Neolithic period, illustrates the architectural and cultural practices of prehistoric societies in the region. Its geographical location and its characteristic shape make it a typical example of the menhirs of that time.

The menhir was classified as historical monuments on 24 November 1982, and was registered by decree on 13 February 1984. These official protections underline its heritage and archaeological importance. It is referenced in the Merimée base, which facilitates its identification and precise location, although the available GPS coordinates are considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5).

The town of Dissay-sous-Courcillon, attached to the department of Sarthe and to the region Pays de la Loire, is home to this emblematic monument. Menhir is mentioned in specialized books, such as Jean-Paul Henri Berthet's Discovering the Megaliths in Sarthe, which contributes to its local and regional reputation. His study provides a better understanding of the lifestyles and beliefs of neolithic populations in this part of France.
