Menhir de la Broussardière: by order of 26 January 1921
Origin and history
The Menhir de la Boussardière, also known as Menhir Puille, is an iconic megalith located in Montaudin, in the department of Mayenne. This monument, erected during the Neolithic period, bears witness to the importance of megalithic constructions in this region during this prehistoric period. It is located precisely east of the hamlet of the Boussardière, south-east of the village of Montaudin, in a landscape marked by ancient history.
The menhir was recognized for its heritage value and was classified as historic monuments on 26 January 1921. This ranking underlines its archaeological and cultural importance, placing it among the protected remains of the department. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its status and location, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (level 5 out of 10).
In the neolithic era, megaliths like the Boussardière were central to the religious, funeral or social practices of local communities. These monuments, often associated with territorial rites or landmarks, reflect a complex collective organization. In the Pays de la Loire, as elsewhere in France, these buildings mark the landscape and offer a lasting testimony of the first sedentary and agricultural societies.
