Origin and history

The Menhir de la Goat, also located in the commune of Tannois, is a megalith erected during the Neolithic period. This monument, located in the municipal woods of Nant-le-Grand (Meuse), marks the landscape of the department for several millennia. Its inscription as Historic Monument by order of 7 December 2000 includes a perimeter of protection of 10 meters around the stone, emphasizing its heritage importance.

The location of the menhir, at the border between Nant-le-Grand (code INSEE 55373) and Tannois, reflects its anchoring in the regional history of Lorraine, now integrated into the Great East. Although the accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), the available GPS coordinates allow it to be located approximately. Municipal property, this prehistoric vestige remains accessible, although practical information on visits is limited in available sources.

Menhirs, like that of the Goat, were often associated with ritual, funeral or territorial functions during Neolithic. Their erection testifies to the technical skills and social organization of the agricultural communities of the time. In the local context, this type of monument could serve as a landmark in a landscape still largely wooded, or mark a gathering place for emerging sedentary populations.
