Origin and history
The Menhir de la Pierre Levée de Dissay-sous-Courcillon is a megalithic vestige dated to Neolithic. Located in the department of Sarthe, in the commune of Dissay-sous-Courcillon, it illustrates the architectural and cultural practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. This monument, typical of megalithic buildings, is composed of an erect stone, characteristic of the menhirs of this time.
Ranked as historical monuments since 24 November 1982, the Menhir de la Pierre Levée is officially protected. This recognition highlights its heritage and archaeological importance. The site is now owned by the municipality of Dissay-sous-Courcillon, which allows its preservation and accessibility to the public.
Menhirs, such as that of Dissay-sub-Courcillon, were often associated with ritual, funeral or symbolic functions in neolithic societies. Their location in the landscape probably reflected choices related to beliefs or the territorial organization of the communities of the time. This monument is part of a wider network of megalithic sites in the Sarthe and Pays de la Loire.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum references, indicate that the menhir is located precisely at the following address: 5000 F Les Perres de Pierre Levee, 72500 Dissay-sous-Courcillon. Its conservation status and geographical location were assessed, although the accuracy of this location is considered fair (level 5 out of 10).
