Menhir, as well as a perimeter of 10 meters around the megalith (cad. Nant-le-Grand A2 70, placed Les Bois communales de Nant-le-Grand ; Tannois C9 1208, placed La Côte Hivernée): inscription by order of 7 December 2000
Origin and history
The Menhir de la Queue, also located in the nearby municipality of Tannois, is a megalithic vestige dated from the Neolithic. Located in the department of the Meuse, in the territory of Nant-le-Grand, this monument is located in a wooded environment, at the places known as Les Bois Communaux and La Côte Hivernée. He was officially protected by a registration order on 7 December 2000, including a 10-metre perimeter around the megalith to preserve its integrity.
This menhir illustrates the cultural and symbolic practices of neolithic societies in Lorraine. At that time, megaliths were often used as territorial markers, places of worship or burials. Their erection reflected a complex collective organization, mobilizing remarkable resources and technical know-how. Although the sources do not specify its exact use, its location in communal woods suggests a link to shared or sacralized spaces.
Administratively, the menhir is now owned by Nant-le-Grand and Tannois. Its approximate location, noted with a priori satisfactory accuracy (level 6/10), allows visitors to locate it in the landscape. No information is available on its current accessibility or any facilities for the public. Data are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, without reference to recent archaeological studies or associated excavations.
