Menhir dit Fuseau ou Quenouille de Jeannette (cad. AB 406) : inscription by decree of 28 July 1969
Origin and history
The Menhir known as Fuseau or Quenouille de Jeannette is an iconic megalithic monument located in Sarzeau, Morbihan (Brittany). This elongated stone block, about 5.5 metres long with a base of 2 × 1 metres, is distinguished by the presence of cupulas engraved on its faces. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the road RD780, about 200 meters from the hamlet of Largueven, where is also the museum of arts, crafts and shops of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys.
The monument, dated Neolithic, bears witness to the cultural and ritual practices of prehistoric societies in the region. Its inscription in the title of historic monuments by order of 28 July 1969 underlines its heritage importance. Although lying down, this menhir remains a significant example of Breton megalithism, often associated with symbolic or funeral functions.
The Sarzeau and Gulf of Morbihan region is rich in megalithic remains, reflecting dense human occupation during the Neolithic period. These monuments, such as the Fuseau de Jeannette, were probably territorial landmarks or gathering places for the agricultural and artisanal communities of the time. Their preservation now allows us to study the techniques of size, transport and erection of stones, as well as the beliefs of ancient populations.
