Menhir dit du Faix du Diable: by order of 23 June 1925
Origin and history
The Menhir du Faix-du-Diable is an emblematic megalith located in La Bigottière, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. This monument, erected during the Neolithic period, bears witness to the cultural and religious practices of prehistoric societies of that time. It is distinguished by its imposing size and its location on the edge of departmental 104, between the hamlets of Paumerie and Chesnais, about 2.5 km southeast of the village of La Bigottière.
Ranked as historic monuments since June 23, 1925, this menhir is protected for its archaeological and heritage value. A signal beacon was installed at his foot to ensure his visibility and preservation. The site is now owned by the municipality of La Bigottière, although it is not explicitly mentioned if it is accessible to the public or integrated into a tourist route.
Menhirs, such as that of the Faix-du-Diable, were often associated with funeral, astronomical or symbolic rites during Neolithic times. Their erection reflected a complex social organization capable of mobilizing important human and technical resources. In the Pays de la Loire region, several megalithic sites attest to this ancient occupation, offering an overview of the beliefs and lifestyles of the people of the time.
