Origin and history
The Menhir du Grand Coudray is a megalithic vestige located in Chantrigné, in the north of the department of Mayenne, in Pays de la Loire. This monument, dated Neolithic, stands near the Grand Coudray, about 50 metres from the Mayenne River. At a height of 1.08 metres, it is located on the edge of a local road, on private land, reflecting the former occupation of this territory.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of 29 June 1976, this menhir illustrates the importance of megalithic constructions in the region. Its location, close to a watercourse and a path, suggests a potentially symbolic or practical role for local neolithic communities. Available data from sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum confirm its protected status and its precise location in the commune of Chantrigné.
The Mayenne region has several similar megalithic sites, reflecting a significant concentration of prehistoric monuments. The Menhir du Grand Coudray, although of modest size, participates in this archaeological heritage. Its classification in 1976 underlines its historical value and the necessity of its preservation, despite a location whose accuracy is considered mediocre (level 5/10 according to Monumentum).
