Origin and history

The Menhir de la Pierre Attelée is a megalithic monument located in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, in the Loire-Atlantique department. The Neolithic is made of quartz sandstone and is 2.79 metres high with a width of 1.40 metres and a thickness of 1 metre. According to Pitre de Lisle du Dreneuc, it is buried deep in the ground. This menhir was momentarily Christianized by the addition of a cross on its top, installed on a masonry base.

In the spring, a local tradition was to decorate the Menhir summit with garlands of flowers. This custom inspired Joseph Rousse's poem Le menhir. The monument was classified as a historical monument in 1978, and is now owned by a private company.

The menhir is mentioned in the Archaeological Dictionary of the Loire-Inferior (1882) by Pitre de Lisle du Dreneuc, which describes its physical characteristics and historical context. The site is referenced in the Merimée database under INSEE 44154, and its location is estimated to be "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10).
