Menhir dit La Roche Longue (cad. C 538) : classification by order of 4 August 1933

Origin and history

The menhir called La Roche Longue is an iconic megalith located in Saint-Marcan, in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. The Neolithic monument reflects the cultural and religious practices of prehistoric societies in the region. It is distinguished by its size and its location in a rural landscape, close to the village and the D89 departmental road.

Ranked a historic monument on August 4, 1933, the menhir is protected for its archaeological and heritage value. It is about 65 metres above sea level, in a field between the cemetery and the so-called Lord Cross. Its location, 200 meters southeast of the village, makes it a historical and geographical landmark for the commune.

The menhir illustrates the importance of megaliths in the Breton landscape, often associated with ritual or commemorative functions. These monuments, erected by neolithic communities, probably marked territories or served as gathering places. Their presence attests to a complex social organisation and a remarkable technical mastery for the time.
