Origin and history

The Messier Hotel is a private hotel built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, located 5 Place Clémenceau in Senones, in the Vosges department. commissioned in the early 1750s by Hyacinthe Messier, then Receiver General of the Principality of Salm, this monument illustrates the prestige of the local elites. Its sober yet elegant architecture is distinguished by carved staples adorning the door and windows, unique decorative elements of the facade.

The building is closely linked to Senones' administrative history, as Hyacinthe Messier, its sponsor, was also the stepfather of Christmas, Chancellor of the Principality. This dual family and professional alliance reflects the networks of influence that structured Lorrain society under the Old Regime. The hotel, a symbol of economic and political power, was designed to house a residence worthy of the status of its owner.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 1982, Hotel Messier enjoys limited protection to its facades and roofs. This late registration (Decree of 21 December 1982) underlines its heritage value, although its interior and detailed history remain partially documented. Today, it bears witness to the civil architectural heritage of the 18th century in Lorraine, a period marked by the peak of the territorial principalities before their integration into France.

The location of the hotel, right in the centre of Senones, near the former Benedictine abbey, suggests its role in the urban life of the time. In the vicinity of religious and administrative institutions, he embodied the collaboration between spiritual and temporal powers, characteristic of the small princely lordly courts. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its exact address but leave pending details of its post-revolutionary use or possible transformations.
