Origin and history
The metal fire of the pier is a lighthouse built in 1885 in Port Vendres, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, at the end of the pier. It owes its name to its metal structure and strategic location on the pier, culminating at 18 meters above sea level. As soon as it was built, it played a key role for navigation in the Mediterranean, with an initial range of 8 nautical miles (15 km). Its original lens, replaced in 1906 by a Luchare apparatus, illustrates the technical advances of the period in maritime marking.
The structure rests on six 14.5-metre cast iron tubes, recessed two metres deep, supporting an octagonal platform housing the watchroom and lantern. A spiral staircase, now gone, once allowed access, but its withdrawal after automation simplified maintenance. The lighthouse resisted violent storms, such as the one of winter 1887-1888, where waves threw stones from the parapet up to 18 metres high, partially damaging the structure.
Ranked a historic monument by order of 12 October 2011, the metal fire of the pier is now owned by the State. Its architecture combines metal and stone, with metal interior walls and a wooden floor in the watchroom. Although the original staircase has been removed, the automated lantern remains functional, perpetuating its role as a guide for mariners in the Mediterranean.
The lighthouse is part of the maritime history of Port Vendres, a major Catalan port since ancient times. Its construction in the 19th century reflects the expansion of port infrastructure under the Third Republic, a period marked by industrialization and the development of trade in the Mediterranean. Today, it is a rare testimony of the coastal engineering of the time, combining robustness and functionality.
Historical sources, such as the Fabricio Cárdenas archives or the Merimée base, underline its heritage importance. The metal fire of the pier is also a symbol of the resilience of maritime structures to natural elements, while illustrating the evolution of lighting techniques, from the initial optics of 1885 to the Luchare apparatus installed in 1906.
