Origin and history
The Périgord Military Museum, located in Périgueux in the Dordogne department, is dedicated to military history, both regional and global. Its collections are originally based on the donations of Second Empire War veterans, enriched later by state deposits and donations from veterans of both world wars and contemporary conflicts. Targeted acquisitions have complemented certain themes, including those related to fine arts, photography and military archives.
Among the iconic pieces, two painted canvases have been classified as historical monuments since 1974: a 19th-century portrait of the intendant-general, Prévost de Launay, and a historical scene by Jean-Adolphe Beaucé (1872) representing the death of Colonel Maleville at the Battle of Solferino. These works illustrate both military art and significant episodes of French history. The museum also houses an exceptional collection of more than 8,000 weapons, covering periods ranging from the Middle Ages to the Resistance.
The museum is labeled Musée de France and is located at 32 rue des Farges in Périgueux. Its themes include colonial wars, World War I, as well as Resistance and Deportation. The collections thus reflect a complete panorama of military engagement in Périgord and beyond, while offering educational and memorial support for visitors.
