Origin and history
The look of the Lodge is a stone work built between 1612 and 1623, part of the Medici aqueduct. This monument, with a square plan and a dome, provided access to the underground gallery of the aqueduct. A four-core staircase was used to descend to water level, while a door on one side provided direct access. Originally, the lantern supported a stone sculpture designed as a sundial, now erased.
The look is aligned with the first two eyes of the Medici aqueduct, located 700 m and 1,300 m east. It marks the beginning of the Promenade de l'Aqueduc, a route along the historical route of the work. The aqueduct, intended to transport the water from Rungis to Paris, was inscribed in the historical monuments in 1988, including the look of the Lodge. The latter is located west of Fresnes, near the A6 motorway, on a roundabout between Chemin des Otages and Avenue du Parc-Médicis.
The sculpture of the sundial, surrounded by a star shape inclined to 49°, reflected an aesthetic and functional will. Although unusable today, it reflects the ingenuity of the builders of the time. Look No. 3, like the other works of the aqueduct, illustrates the hydraulic architecture of the seventeenth century, combining utility and elegance. Its registration in 1988 preserved this heritage linked to the history of the water supply in Paris.
