Origin and history
The mission cross of Saint-Jean-en-Val, listed as a Historic Monument, was erected in 1894. It consists of a rock base topped by a square walk leading to a carved pedestal. The latter, adorned with a scene of the Last Judgment in bas-relief on its eastern face, supports a metallic cross whose barrel incorporates the instruments of the Passion. Its architecture combines stone and metal, typical of the religious achievements of the late 19th century.
The pedestal, consisting of a moulted base and a cornice topped by a overturned doucin, forms a platform on which rests a half-glove serving as a base to the cross. The ensemble, protected by a decree of 18 August 1988, illustrates local sacred art and the renewal of parish missions at that time. The accuracy of its location is considered fair (note 5/10), and the monument belongs to the commune of Saint-Jean-en-Val.
The cross, with its carved pedestal, symbolizes both an artistic heritage and a strong spiritual dimension for the community. The instruments of the Passion, inserted between the metal pillars, recall the liturgical traditions and popular devotion of the Auvergne at the end of the 19th century. This monument also reflects the influence of the Catholic revival movements that marked the region after the political and social upheavals of the century.
