Origin and history
The medieval site museum of Beaumontois in Périgord is located in the former Abbey of Saint-Avit-Seneur, a religious building dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. This monument, classified among archaeological and historical sites, illustrates the medieval monastic architecture of the region. In particular, it houses a grave reconstruction attributed to a pilgrim of Santiago de Compostela, highlighting the role of the Dordogne as a stage on pilgrimage paths.
The abbey, now partially preserved, bears witness to the spiritual and cultural importance of the Périgord in the Middle Ages. The museum, labeled Musée de France, offers an immersion in local history through collections related to archaeology, decorative arts and monastic life. Its exact address, 24 Rue de l'Abbatiale in Saint-Avit-Seneur, confirms its anchoring in the rural heritage of New Aquitaine.
The geographic accuracy of the site is assessed as fair (note 5/10), possibly reflecting uncertainties about the exact boundaries of the medieval abbatial domain. The museum is distinguished by its pedagogical approach, centered on the materiality of religious and secular life in the 11th and 12th centuries, a period that was a pleasure for Romanesque constructions in Périgord.
